ECG Test

The ECG full form is electrocardiogram; it is a simple and fast diagnostic test to estimate the electrical activity of the heart. It is used to diagnose heart problems in all age groups. The ECG test result is displayed on a screen or paper, as spikes and dips called waves.

Indications for an ECG Test –

Various diagnoses and findings are possible with electrocardiography. Altogether, the identification of diseases is made based upon the patterns. Your physician may recommend an electrocardiogram test to determine or detect: 

• Arrhythmias – Abnormal heart rhythm.
• Coronary artery disease (CAD) / ischemic heart disease is due to blockage or narrowing of arteries resulting in chest pain or a heart attack.
• History of heart attack
• To monitor heart disease treatments, such as a pacemaker.
• As a routine health check-up; for example before a surgical procedure.
• Health problems like diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol or habits such as cigarette smoking or illegal drug use.

Signs and symptoms include –

• Chest-pain
• Chest tightness
• Heart palpitations
• Dizziness, confusion
• Breathlessness
• Weakness
• Syncope (Fainting)
• Radiating pain to neck, back, shoulder or either arm
• Heartburn
